Community Experiences

Some of life’s most memorable travel experiences are often generated by time spent with local people; engaging with them, hearing their stories, and learning about their way of life. There are many ways to do this in Dominica and we are happy to discuss such community experiences with you.

Kalinago Territory

One obvious example of an enduring community is the Kalinago Territory where you can get hands-on experience baking cassava bread, finding out about medicinal plants and how they are used, or learning basket weaving from Kalinago women. Much of their expert knowledge has been passed down through generations, and your interest in and connection with their fragile cultural heritage really helps to keep it alive.

Fresh produce markets

At Secret Bay, we also encourage you to take a trip to the local market at Portsmouth with our chef. The market is just a short drive away and is a colorful and lively place to visit on a Saturday morning.

Often a social occasion as well as a shopping trip, the Saturday market is a great opportunity to mix with local people, to learn about Caribbean food, farm produce, and then afterwards see for yourself how our local herbs, root crops and vegetables are used in cooking.
