Bird Watching

Dominica has two endemic and extremely rare Amazonian parrots that are found nowhere else on planet earth. They are affectionately known here as the Sisserou (Amazona imperialis) and the Jaco (Amazona arausiaca). The Jaco is frequently sighted in the forested interior of the island, but the far more elusive Sisserou is usually only found in the foothills of Morne Diablotin, Dominica’s highest mountain.

Syndicate Forest

Without doubt, the best way to catch sight of the Jaco, the Sisserou, and many other species of bird is to take a relaxing stroll through the rainforest with an experienced and knowledgeable guide.

One of the best places for a birdwatching trip is the Syndicate Nature Trail in the Morne Diablotin National Park. It is very close to Secret Bay and is an easy and very scenic rainforest trail where there’s a good chance of spotting Dominica’s two endemic parrots: the Sisserou (Amazona imperialis) and the Jaco (Amazona arausiaca). The Syndicate Trail is also a great place for sightings of Dominica’s four species of hummingbird, as well as rare tremblers, thrashers, bananaquits, warblers, flycatchers, and many more.

Our expert guide is able to mimic the call of many birds, drawing them out of the foliage and into view, and knows all the best places to find rare and beautiful species. His intimate knowledge of the Syndicate area also means he has a handle on where parrots are feeding and nesting.

The Indian River

A great way to see water birds is to take a leisurely boat ride along the Indian River where a dense mangrove environment provides a home for bird species such as kingfishers, egrets, herons, teals, and Caribbean coots. Birdwatching in Dominica’s forest and river habitats is at the same time leisurely, scenic and very rewarding.

If a trip along the Indian River takes your fancy, either for birdwatching or just for fun, then let us know. We’ll arrange for your river guide to pick you up by traditional fishing boat on our Tibay Beach to start your tour.
