Volcanic springs, waterfalls, lakes and more

Unrivaled in the region, Dominica’s network of hiking trails is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts who also enjoy blue skies, tropical warmth, and a rum punch sunset. Dominica’s elevated interior is a striking wilderness of mountain peaks, steep ridges and deep river valleys, all of which are cloaked in a lush blanket of rainforest and montane thicket.

Historically, many of Dominica’s trails were formed to connect remote settlements and plantation estates before the advent of roads. Other tracks lead to volcanic springs, waterfalls or lakes. These days, many of these routes have become the domain of hiking enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors.

World-class hiking trails

Dominica has wonderful half- and full-day hikes and nature walks, many of which are within easy reach of Secret Bay.

Morne Diablotin is Dominica’s highest mountain and the journey to the summit is one of the island’s most advanced hikes. Summit on a clear day and enjoy sweeping views of Dominica and neighboring islands. This is also the domain of Dominica’s emblematic Sisserou (Amazona imperialis), a critically endangered Amazonian parrot that is found only on the nature island.

The Syndicate Nature Trail is a charming forest walk in the foothills of Morne Diablotin and is famous as a parrot sanctuary. In the company of a bird expert, there is a good chance of sighting Dominica’s two endemic parrots: the Sisserou (Amazona imperialis) and the Jaco (Amazona arausiaca) as well as many other species.

Boiling Lake Trail

Concealed within the wilds of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hike begins and ends at Titou Gorge. Hike through a lush rainforest habitat, exploring mountain streams and verdant landscapes as you ascend Morne Nicholls. From the summit, descend into the otherworldly hydrothermal terrain of the Valley of Desolation, a volcanically active landscape of hot bubbling mud, brightly colored rocks and steaming fumaroles. Continue onwards until you make your final climb to The Boiling Lake – an active an active volcanic caldera flooded with bubbling greyish-blue water, said to be the second-largest of its kind in the world.

As challenging as it is rewarding, the trek to the lake is likely the greatest day-hike in the Caribbean. Our experienced hiking guides are on hand to help you on your journey, as well as provide transportation to and from the trailhead.

The Waitukubuli National Trail

Dominica’s regionally distinct 200km Waitukubuli National Trail is a challenging and multi-faceted trek for serious hikers.

This peerless Caribbean challenge is comprised of 14 individual hiking trails that join together to create an uninterrupted trek from the south of Dominica to the north. The journey meanders across the island, through forests, villages and farmlands, across rivers and over mountains. It is a challenge for lovers of nature and the great outdoors that also encompasses indigenous Amerindian, colonial, and Creole heritage.

Trail Segments 10 through 12 run close to Secret Bay and we can help you experience them and get a taste of this great island journey.
