Three Generations of Family Find Happy Place at Secret Bay

6715488337_4f55c1f76d_z“Mix one part Swiss Family Robinson, two parts Wallpaper Magazine and a good dose of Brazil ’66 (think Oscar Niemeyer and his ability to make concrete sexy) and you might be getting close.” That’s how Emily McInnes described Secret Bay after her family’s first visit to stay with us in 2012. This remains one of the most vivid and wonderful portraits we’ve heard of our unique combination of luxury, seclusion, and style.

Emily was part of the remarkable McInnes family who took over our entire resort for their family holiday. Having always had an annual family winter vacation together in the Caribbean, they were used to the simplicity that comes with all-inclusives, but were looking for something new. Additionally, this wasn’t just any family party. They were looking for accommodations that were able to cater to their 90 year old mother, Emily and her husband, their daughter, partner and their new 3-month old baby boy, along with one more daughter, her husband and two more kids under 10.

They admitted to being a little worried that our small and intimate resort might struggle with their diverse food requirements (they are all passionate about their food, and several of them are vegan). But Emily soon stopped worrying. She marveled that our staff seemed to have everything figured out before she knew to ask. “If I thought ‘coconut’ in my head, one would somehow magically appear,” she said. “I actually think they have ESP.”

With so many different family members of so many different ages, they left with a wealth of memories. Between them they’d done so much during their time here; taken trips up Indian River, explored the forests with expert bird guide Dr. Birdy, cantered through the countryside on horseback, gone fishing with Don, and much more.

When Emily’s father Glenn was asked what he remembered best, however, his answer summed it up. “Choosing among the highlights of Secret Bay is a futile task,” he said. “Unlimited snorkeling in toothpaste coloured water, the organic food box delivery, our personal chef Rose who was able to accommodate our wide variety of diets, the architecture that made us feel like we were stepping off the pages of Vogue–even in flip-flops…”

“Put it this way,” he said, “This place is what you imagine when you are asked to go to your happy place.”
