Canyoning Caribbean: Interview With Liz From Extreme Dominica

Although it can be easy to just switch off at Secret Bay and spend your entire holiday never leaving the resort, there’s plenty to do on Dominica. One of the most active and memorable experiences is Canyoning, and we partner with Extreme Dominica to offer this incredible experience to our guests. We spoke to one of their team, Liz about what guests can expect if the go canyoning Caribbean style.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT CANYONING AS AN EXPERIENCE?

Whether we are jumping over cascades into crystal clear pools, wading, swimming, climbing or rappelling through waterfalls, the excitement never ends. It’s where the rock meets the water. There are numerous spectacular canyons throughout Dominica, with varying levels of difficulty.

WHAT MAKES DOMINICA SUCH A A GREAT PLACE FOR CANYONING?

Dominica is one of the wettest places on the planet, with over 300 inches of rainfall a year and home to 9 volcanoes and over 300 rivers. The island starts at sea level and rises to 4747′. This makes for the perfect terrain for some of the world’s most beautiful canyons. Added bonus–nice warm water. No need for dry-suits.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PLACE THAT YOU GO? WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL?

We have many beautiful canyons, but for beginners, we mainly use the canyon that forms between Freshwater Lake and Trafalgar Falls. It is divided into 3 sections–one beginner, one intermediate, and one advanced. Trois Piton is our personal favorite but it is not for beginners. It takes a whole day to complete and the water volume is very high. Lots of fun.

WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE THING A GUEST HAS SAID TO YOU ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH YOU?

We have been told many times that is was the “experience of a lifetime”. We’ve also been told the canyon looks like a movie set. The scenery is “other-worldly”. It’s pretty awesome what a million years of water erosion and a little gravity can create. It is nature’s finest work of architecture.
