Secret Bay Takes to the Cover of Travel + Leisure Magazine

It is an honor to share Secret Bay’s recent cover and feature in Travel + Leisure’s April issue, in which Gina Decaprio Vercesi brilliantly captures the traveller’s experience through her illustrative descriptions of Secret Bay and Dominica. The article invites readers to walk the lush sanctuary of the Nature Island, providing a window to the island’s natural wonders and the “plush refuge” of our eco-hotel.

“Secret Bay’s owner, Gregor Nassief, has a passion for immersing his guests in the culture and natural beauty of the island. I drank a sorrel-and-ginger infusion and dined on invasive (and delicious) lionfish speared by Don Mitchell, the resort’s boat captain. I paddled the Indian River with Fire (born Patrickson Lockhart), a dreadlocked boatman who pointed out native flora. And I searched the trees for parrots on the Syndicate Nature Trail with local ornithologist Bertrand Jno Baptiste, otherwise known as Dr. Birdy.”

An ecotourism destination that draws adventurous souls, Dominica is home to the 115-mile Waitukubuli trail. In an effort to restore the longest hiking trail in the Carribbean back to its original glory after Hurricane Maria in 2017, island hotels such as ours have implemented voluntourism projects for visitors to participate in if desired. Introduced through our concierge, Verseci shares her experience joining Annette Peyer Loerner—who adopted Segment 11 of the trail— in trail rehabilitation efforts on the famed route.

“Unlike other spots in the West Indies, where the primary lure is lounging on a powder-white shore with a cocktail, travelers journey to Dominica, a volcanic island between Martinique and Guadeloupe, for adventure. Miles of rain-forest trails lead to black-sand beaches fringed by coral reefs, to waterfalls that cascade into swimming holes, and to a bubbling fumarole-a rift in the earth’s crust near a volcano-called Boiling Lake.”

New York-based photographer Noe DeWitt captures moments that mirror Vercesi’s experience in stunning photography. The magazine’s cover shot, which featured one variation for newsstand issues around the country and a second cover exclusively for subscribers, was photographed from the path to his villa at Secret Bay. Framing Secret Beach’s rich vegetation and pristine coastline, DeWitt describes Secret Bay as “intimate, peaceful, and beautifully designed.”

We are proud to see beautiful Dominica spotlighted by one of the world’s most revered travel publications. Secret Bay is firmly committed to continuing our efforts in maintaining the Nature Island in the pristine condition in which it was discovered as well as provide guests the coveted opportunity to revel in ethical luxury.

Since reopening our doors on November 1, 2018, we are incredibly excited to share with our guests six beautifully updated villas, including the new two-story Ti-Féy Villa; our new Zing Zing Restaurant, offering seasonal, locally-sourced fare and jaw-dropping views; the Gommier Spa, a treehouse style space where guests can indulge in solo and couple treatments curated by our expert therapists; and the Bwa Mang Wellness Pavilion, an idyllic locale for guests to recharge and rejuvenate with yoga and wellness classes.
