A Canadian Couple’s Journey to Secret Bay

When a well-traveled Canadian couple set out in search of their next Caribbean escape, an article naming Secret Bay as the #1 resort in the Caribbean caught their eye. Having explored nearly every island in the region, they chose Dominica, an unspoiled paradise known as the “Nature Island”, for something different. What they found went beyond a typical luxury getaway.
In this interview, they share what made Secret Bay stand apart, the moments that defined their villa experience, and why they now affectionately call it “Serenity Bay.”
What made you choose Secret Bay for this trip?
Initially, we saw an article in our local newspaper that listed Secret Bay at the #1 rated resort in all of the Caribbean. We have visited virtually all of the islands and Dominica has always been one of our favourite islands.

How did it stand out from other destinations you were considering?
The resort stands out from other resorts that we have or might consider in many ways. On arrival, we immediately experienced the natural elements and landscape design that form the fabric of Secret Bay. Tranquility immediately enveloped us upon arrival and set the tone for the most relaxing holiday imaginable.
We were greeted by the warmest, most engaging, and attentive staff. This became a constant throughout our stay. I know other resorts take pride in great staff; Secret Bay however takes it to a different level—and in every aspect of service at the resort.
Secret Bay has gone above and beyond in the design and servicing of its hillside accommodations. The fridge comes fully stocked with drinks, breakfast items, and snacks. The 24/7 Concierge service is seamless and provides a level of responsiveness unlike other similar services we have had in the past.
As Canadians, what aspects of Secret Bay do you think will resonate most with other Canadian travelers?
The seclusion and location of Secret Bay and its environmental sustainability will resonate with Canadians. We are a country that embraces nature in all its forms, and Secret Bay recognizes and respects the interconnectedness of living within it.
How did your journey to Dominica unfold, and in what ways did the experience of getting there shape your first impressions compared to other tropical destinations you have visited?
Dominica is more difficult to get to than most other Caribbean islands but is worth the effort. It is in a lush rainforest with spectacular waterfalls and natural beauty. It is modestly populated compared to many of the other islands.
When you think back to your villa, what were the features or moments that really defined your stay there?
You feel no need to leave the room. You have a plunge pool and a beautiful view of the ocean. You have a kitchen, barbeque, food and drinks. We had a lovely outdoor shower, laundry facilities and everything you require. The concierge would attend to any needs you had, from making reservations, to ordering golf carts to your room (the resort mode of transportation), to brainstorming activities. Sharon dropped our room key down a steep cliff. Within minutes a team of rock climbers attended to safely retrieve the keys!
How did staying in a private villa change the way you experienced your holiday compared to being at a larger resort or hotel?
A private villa allows “you to be you.” Peace and serenity reign supreme.

Was there an experience, whether on property or exploring Dominica, that left a lasting impression on you?
The experiences we had informed us that Dominicans are a proud and welcoming community. We thoroughly enjoyed our tours and dinners off the resort.
For other Canadians considering a trip to Secret Bay, what would you tell them about the experience and what to expect?
Canadians – Dominicans are us. We share a love of life. We are both welcoming peoples who treat visitors with respect.
If you had to choose one highlight from your trip that you know you will always carry with you, what would it be and why?
We have several highlights from our trip. We had great snorkelling between the 2 bays. The sports activity crew were amazingly informative and helpful. The cocktails were spectacularly prepared and the food was inventive and delicious. The resort manager Craig was very friendly and welcoming. So this is less of an answer than the question. The truth is, there is not one highlight that we carry with us. Rather, it is the totality of the experience.
Thinking ahead, would you return to Secret Bay, and if so, what would you most look forward to doing or discovering next time?
I would rename the resort Serenity Bay. That captures the resort perfectly.
