How to Help Caribbean Islands in the Aftermath of Hurricane Irma

While Dominica and Secret Bay, our guests, staff and families, fared well in Hurricane Irma’s path, we are deeply saddened by the hardship that has befallen our northern Caribbean neighbors and loved ones in Barbuda, St. Maarten/St. Martin, St. Barthélemy, Anguilla, the Virgin Islands and the Turks & Caicos Islands. Below, find a handful of immediate ways you can come to the aid of those in need.

In order to get our neighbors back on their feet, collective support from the public is imperative. First and foremost, monetary donations are the most beneficial way to help those impacted by Irma’s devastation. Such endowments are crucial in providing basic supplies to those in need, including water, food and medicine. If you choose to donate online to one of the following organisations, all proceeds will provide immediate emergency relief and longer-term recovery assistance to help residents rebuild. The Caribbean Tourism Recovery Fund is the travel industry’s way of directly supporting the destinations that were most impacted by Hurricane Irma, expediting the recovery and thus, return of visitors and jobs.

Safe Shelter

Another way in which one can help is to offer a safe shelter to those whose homes have been decimated by the hurricane. If your residence has withstood Hurricane Irma’s wrath, Airbnb has organized a commendable program for homeowners to open their doors to evacuees as an emergency shelter. Local Campaigns

GoFundMe has opened an Irma-specific fundraising page for any related campaigns. Here, one can donate to local fundraising campaigns such as American University of Antigua (AUA)’s Barbuda Relief Fund, dedicated to providing emergency supplies, water and medicine to those who have been displaced or otherwise impacted by the hurricane.

At Secret Bay, we are committed to helping our neighbors both confront and overcome the ravages of one of the largest hurricanes to ever hit the Caribbean. Any support you can offer is vital. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions regarding donation opportunities. Together, we can make a difference.
