Explore Dominica

With Dominica’s unique flora, fauna and geography, adventures are endless: rainforest, national parks, waterfalls, hot springs and a river for every day of the year. Not to mention active volcanoes, a boiling lake and world-class scuba diving. A visit to the Carib Territory on the East Coast should not be missed. With no poisonous snakes or dangerous insects on the island you can explore this abundant wilderness in complete safety.

Our knowledgeable concierge will be happy to organise exciting days out carefully created just for you. The Secret Bay “Waitukubuli Wanderer” is available with an excellent driver or if you prefer we can arrange a hire car so that you can explore the island independently. We have some great options for romantic Honeymoon and Anniversary tours and we also offer two complimentary “A la carte” days out for those taking a longer break.

With so much to do, see and experience at Secret Bay and in Dominica, we think you’ll need to come again.

Scuba-Diving

With multi-coloured sponges and corals, unusual marine life and unique diving sites such as “Champagne” (a bubbling, underwater hot spring), Dominica is one of the top five dive destinations in the region, and has been ranked amongst the top ten in the world. There are a variety of dive sites suitable for all levels of divers.

Bird-Watching

Dominica’s diversity of habitats (tropical forest, high mountains, bush and savannahs) provide for a wide variety of birds on a relatively small land mass. The island is a bird-watchers’ paradise. Close to Secret Bay, Syndicate Nature Reserve is one of the best places to see the most famous Dominican bird: the endemic and endangered Sisserou Parrot.

Hiking

Dominica’s extraordinary topography makes it hiking heaven. Trails range from the easy Glassy Trail to the challenging hike up to the top of the tallest mountain in Dominica: Morne Diablotins. For experienced trekkers there is also the arduous 6-hour walk through the Valley of Desolation to reach the remarkable Boiling Lake – the second largest hot spring in the world. To really get to know Dominica though, why not hike the Waitukubuli Trail which aims to eventually cover the length and breadth of the island? It will take two weeks to walk it in its entirety – but you can also tackle each of the 14 separate trails that make up this amazing project one at a time. Check it out.

Whale-watching

Dominica’s unique underwater landscape provides the perfect terrain for whales to live and mate. Although the peak season for spotting whales is November to March, whales live off Dominica’s coast all year round and whale tour operators boast a 90% success rate for spotting these fabulous creatures. Whale and dolphin species include: Sperm, Pygmy sperm, Pilot whales, Spotted dolphin and Atlantic spinner dolphin, amongst others.

Visit National Parks

With much of the island uninhabited, a large part of Dominica has been allocated to National Parks. A visit to the Morne Trois Pitons National Park (declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997) is a must. The Park boasts five volcanoes, freshwater lakes, hot springs and waterfalls including the famous Trafalgar Falls. Close to Secret Bay are the fabulous Morne Diablotin National Park as well as the well-maintained Fort Shirley in Cabrits National Park, beautifully situated on a peninsula, overlooking Portsmouth and Secret Bay in the distance.

Emerald Pool

Located within the Morne Trois Pitons National Park – a short trail through woodland and across rivers leads you to this natural bathing pool deep in the forest. The waters may be a bit chilly but it’s definitely worth it.

Sulphur Spa

Dominica's natural hot springs are a fabulous way to relax and unwind. Lie back in the soothing steam surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle. Many of the spas on the island have been landscaped in fun and inventive ways - let us recommend one to suit your needs.

Indian River

Kayak from Secret Bay or take a guided boat ride up this magical river. A haven for birdwatchers, the river leads you deep into the forest, past mangroves and the amazing Bwa Mang trees; it was featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. You might like to stop for a “Special Punch” at the mellow bar along the way that was a popular haunt with the cast and crew.

Visit to the Carib Territory

One of the last pre-Colombian populations in the Caribbean, the Kalinago who live in eight villages across the Carib Territory on the East Coast of the island, have kept much of their traditional culture and way of life. They elect their own chief and are always pleased to welcome visitors. Visit the Kalinago Barana Auté (Cultural Village) and stop at the craft stalls for beautiful traditional handiwork including lovely woven straw baskets.

Visit to Roseau

The quaint capital of Dominica feels lost in time. Visit on the big Market Day (Saturday morning) to see the bustling town in full swing. Stroll past stalls piled high with tropical fruit, vegetables, flowers and spices and soak up the warm atmosphere of this genuine and friendly place.
